Craps Terminology and Slang You Need To Know

Craps. One of the all-time casino classic games. It’s simple from afar – betting on the roll of a pair of dice. But there’s a lot more you should know if you’re going to play online craps.

That’s why we’ve put together this super helpful glossary of craps terms and slang. So you can learn all the lingo and obtain all the info before rolling those dice.

A

Ace Deuce - A simple one to start. A roll of three – combining a one and a two.

Aces - One of two terms for rolling a pair of ones. Also known as Snake Eyes.

Any Craps - A bet that the next roll will total 2, 3 or 12.

Any Seven - A bet that the next roll will be 7, made up of any combination.

Arm - When a player is “skilled” at rolling (or shooting) the dice in their favor

Base Dealers - You’ll find one Base Dealer standing at each end of the craps table, keeping track of bets. Look out for them when playing live craps online at real tables.

Betting Right - When making a wager, this means you’re betting with the person rolling the dice, or the shooter. Also known as a pass-line bet.

Betting Wrong - And of course, this means you’re betting against the shooter.

Big Eight - A bet that the shooter will roll an eight before a seven

Big Red - A slang term for seven. Craps players don’t like to say seven out loud – they’re a superstitious bunch!

Big Six - A bet that the shooter will roll a six before a seven

Bones - An alternative term for the dice

Box Cars - A bet that the next roll will total 12

Box Numbers - You can wager on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 – all of which are classed as Box Numbers.

Boxman - The person who sits between the two dealers supervising the game.

Boys - A slang term for the two base dealers at the table

C

C&E Bet - A two-in-one wager combining a craps bet on 2, 3 or 12 with a bet on 11. The bet has two split payouts.

Center Field - The slang term for rolling a 9

Cold Dice or Cold Table - A losing run, used when players aren’t making their point at a table.

Come Bet or Come Line - A bet made after the point has been established or the dice have been rolled

Come Out - The first roll made in a round of craps

Crap Out - Rolling a 2, 3, or 12 on the come out roll. If you do, anyone who bets with the shooter loses, and anyone who bets against them wins.

Craps Check - A bet placed on craps numbers during the first roll of the round

Craps Numbers - The numbers 2, 3 and 12

D

Don’t Come Bet - The opposite of a come bet. Don’t Come bets win on the first roll of 2, 3 and 12. They lose if the point is rolled before a 7.

Don’t Pass Bet - The opposite of a pass bet. A bet that the shooter will not make their point and will roll a 2, 3 or 12.

Double Odds - An odds bet that doubles the original come bet or pass bet

Down - Removing or reducing a bet from the table

E

Easy Way - Shooting a 4, 6, 8 or 10 but without rolling a double 

F

Fever - The slang term for rolling a 5

Free Odds - A bet with no house edge. The bet must be placed with another bet.

Front Line - A pass line bet, or a bet that the shooter will win.

G

Garden - A slang term for a field bet or one-roll bet

George - The slang term for a generous tipper!

H

Hard Way - Shooting a 4, 6, 8 or 10 by rolling a double 

Hi-Lo - Aone-roll bet on the highest and lowest possible options, a 2 and a 12.

Hi-Lo-Yo - A one-roll bet on 2, 11 or 12.

Hop Bet - A bet that the next roll will have a particular combination. For example, a 3 and a 5.

Horn Bet - A split bet between the numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12. For example, a $4 horn bet is four $1 bets on each number.

I

Inside Numbers - Bets made on the numbers 5, 6, 8 and 9.

L

Lay Bet - A bet that a 7 will be rolled before the number you’re placing

Lay Odds - Betting against the shooter, to give odds behind a Don't Pass or Don't Come.

Layout - The area on the table where the bets are placed

Little Joe - A slang term for rolling a pair of twos

Little Phoebe - Another slang term for rolling a five

Low - A one-roll bet for a two

M

Mark the Point - When the dealer puts a marker on the layout, showing players the point number.

Marker - A plastic disc used to mark the point

Mechanic - A shooter who believes they can control the dice

N

Natural - Rolling a 7 or 11 on the Come Out roll

Nina - Rolling or betting on a 9

O

Odds Bet - An additional wager placed after the Pass Line Bet

Off - What players say when they’re not betting on the next roll

Off and On - Dealers paying off come bets when a new come bet on the same number is made

On - When your bet is in play, or when a point has been established

One-Roll Bet - A bet that is lost or won after a single dice roll.

Outside Numbers - Placing bets on the numbers 4, 5, 9 and 10

P

Parlay - When you add all your current winnings to your bet for the next roll.

Pass Bet - A bet that the shooter passes the come-out roll and rolls a 7 or 11.

Pass Line - A section on the craps table where pass-line bets are made.

Payout Odds - The odds offered when players win a craps bet. The odds rise from +100 up to +3000.

Place Bet - A bet that the shooter will roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 before a seven.

Place Numbers - The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10

Point - If the come-out roll lands on a place number, that becomes the point.

Press - A strategy to build up winnings during a hot streak, by adding your winnings from a successful place bet to the existing place bet on a number.

Proposition Bet - Placing a bet on the center of the layout

Puppy Paws - The slang term for rolling a hard 10, or two fives.

R

Rail or Rack - The part of the table where the players keeps the chips

S

Seven Out - When the shooter rolls a seven before the point number

Shooter - The common term for the player rolling the dice

Shooting Dice - A slang term for playing craps, although more commonly associated with street craps

Snake Eyes - The slang term for rolling a pair of ones

Square Pair - The slang term for rolling a hard eight, or two fours.

Stickman - The name for a dealer who uses a stick to push dice to the shooter

T

Toke - If you’re a George, you’ll know this! Another word for a tip.

W

Working Bet - An active bet on the next roll

Y

Yo - A slang term for rolling an 11

Yo Bet - A bet on the next roll to be 11. And a high-paying one at that!
